disAPPney: Magic Band Budget

Have you ever gotten home from vacation only to find out that you overspent and you now have to pay bills?

If your answer to that question was yes, than you are reading the right blog.  I have recently discovered a new app, Magic Band Budget (released July 1st, 2014), developers David and Kristen Kittle.  This app is the answers to my prayers (at least for the bill gods).  I experienced a hard shove into reality and can't tell you how many times I have come home from vacation, after spending too much money.   In the end making me wish I hadn't gone on vacation to begin with.  If only I had planned ahead of time and spent within my budget (This just happened to me over my May vacation to WDW)

Disney has made it so easy to make purchases. All you do is put your wrist up to the scanner and poof you just spent 50 bucks (which will most likey be charged to your hotel reservations, if you are staying on property.)  This results in a hefty bill upon leaving.  If you are not charging purchases to your room, it is still very easy to overspend on vacation; especially if you are in the mindset of "I am on vacation".  The Magic Band App allows me to do just that, plan a budget and keep track of it while I am on vacation.  The app is completely customizable, mostly geared toward WDW and Disneyland. However, you can use it for virtually any vacation or budgeting item.  I am currently using it for my upcoming cruise in January.

The key features of the app include
     - Budgeting Menu
     - Countdown to Vacation
     - Expense goal setting
     - Park information, tips, and tricks

Budgeting Menu:

I am able to set a budget for my cruise reservation, souvenirs, Photos, Port Adventures, etc. the options are endless. When I am on the cruise each time I go to purchase an item (e.g. Pictures on board the ship $40)  I can add the cost right to my picture budget.  I can add a description, image (i.e. photo of receipt), etc.  Then I can go to that particular category and view the amount I have left, and graphical representation of that budget.  Back on the main screen I can see what my total budget is and what I have left after purchasing an item.

Countdown to Vacation:

Just like it sounds you can put in your vacation dates and the app will countdown for you.  In my case my "Set Sail Date"; I have 206 days to go!  Sure you can purchase a separate app with this funtion but those cost at least $.99 if not more; this app is only $2.99 and you get so much more and all in place. The advantage to having the countdown in this app, is the fact that you will know how long you have to raise money for your budget.  You can also, brag to you friends on Facebook how long you have left until you go on your adventure.  A very handy feature.

Expense goal setting

Set yourself an expense goal. Set aside money each month. Be sure to reflect that in your Magic Band Budget app. You will be able to sleep well and not have to worry on vacation knowing that you will have enough money in your budget for you vacation.

Park information, tips, tricks

This is the best part of the app.  I bought a guide book to WDW with a whole salou of tips and tricks on saving money and getting the most out of my vacation.  If I had this app 6 months ago I wouldn't have needed the guide book.  Let me mention the book is huge and heavy, not ideal to carry around in the parks.  All of the tips, tricks, and info are great and very well organized.  I learned some new trick/tips that I did not know beforehand. If for nothing else purchase the app for this feature alone.

Functionality

I have to admit the first time I used the app it crashed but only once and only that first time.  I also have to admit that it takes some playing around with before you get the hang of it.  Once you get the hang of it and you know what you are looking for, it is very user friendly.  I would suggest to the developers to integrate a help menu/ user guide or put a link to a website with this information. Other than that if functions great and I am loving it.  The fact that it doesn't require wifi, will benefit us greatly when we are in the middle of the carribbean with no internet or data.

I will definitely be adding this app as a permanent staple for any vacation that I take (and not just for the monorail that I get to see in the background).  This will help prevent me from going on vacation and overspending; as it is often very easy to do.  As much as we don't want to have to think about what we are spending (let alone keep track of it) while we are on vacation the alternative is much worse (seeing a very large bill at check-out or coming home and seeing your bank account drained.)

I have already started planning my cruise which is still 6 months away (if you have been keeping up with posts you know I am a planner and this is when I start planning).  The Magic Band Budget is definitly an excellent tool to help me plan I can now get rid of my all of the spreadsheets I have made int the past.

Take a look at the Magic Band Budget app.  I garentee that spending a few dollars will save you plenty more in the end.  For more information on the Magic Band Budget app please check out the following links:

DisSONGSney: Adventurtorium!

Before we start Let me ask you some questions:

1. Do you like Disney Pixer's Up?
2. Do you like Disney's Song book?
3. Do you like new experiences?

If you said yes to any of those questions then this new album Adventurtorium is the newest addition to your Disney music collection.

I must say when I was asked by djRom to preview the album and write a review on it; I was delighted and happy to oblige but I didn't know what to expect.  It turns out I was pleasently surprised, I love the interpretation and I think djRom is on to something.  A new way of story telling through song.  The best part of it all is hearing all your favorite songs from Disney in the retelling of Up.  I challenge you to see how many you recognize (There are so many, I love it!).

You get the entire story of Disney Pixar's Up with a twist.  You get a great variety of Disney music from other Disney classics, as well as a few songs thrown into the mix that are just plain fun.  All of the songs used fit perfectly into the story it is like Up the musical!   The mixes of the Disney music is just that an upbeat, exciting, new way to experience them.

As djRom's description of the album tells us, the tracks were mixed using two turntables, mixers, Serato, and Audacity.  Although seemingly effortless, this in no way was an easy album to put together.  I must say it came together beautifully and as I said effortlessly.

I think any Disney fan or anyone who appreciates Disney music will enjoy this album and I haven't even told you the best part of it all.  The best part is that 25% of the cost of the album will be donated to Give Kids the World, a fantastic organization whose purpose is to fullfill the wish of children who are terminally ill and dream of going to Walt Disney World.

The cost of the album is extremely reasonable (only $10) and you get:
          - 2 hand colored Discs
          - 4-panel hand-drawn CD wallet
          - 35 wonderful tracks
          - For a teaser check out http://jpar.co/adventurtorium-teaser/
But don't wait to order this album because it is a limited edition, only 500 copies are being made!

I plan to make this spectacular album a part of my Disney Music Library.  My favorite tracks so far are number 16 and 17 (I will wait till the album releases to tell you the names.)  Put April 14, 2014 at 4:14 p.m. Eastern in your calendar right now because that is when the album will be released!  Also, If you like to hear a preview before purchasing visit disdads.com radio on April 13th at 8 a.m. Eastern.  #Adventurtorium24 is the 24 hour Adventurtorium release event where you can preview the music.  Again I would not wait long to purchase as there are only going to be 500 copies. However, the album will be available for free from the Adventurtorium website.

For the general Disney fan it is not enough to listen to all of our our favoritie Disney songs over and over.   We like to hear different interpretations and variations.  This album Adventurtorium definitely delivers when it comes to that.  Be the Disney Finatic that I know you are and purchase Advenurtorium.

"That's What Storyteller do, We Restore Order."

As I did a review on another podcast as a guest speaker and I will post the link here for all of you to listen I am just going to be posting the notes I made up for the show.

Please, be respectful to any spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc. mistakes as these notes were meant strictly for me only to reference when giving my review of the film!

As usual if you have comments, question, thoughts in general, regarding this post or any others please feel free to speak your mind!

Spoiler Alert:  There might be a few spoilers in my notes and the review I have done with the other podcast if you do not wish to hear them please stop here:

Show notes:

Saving Mr. Banks

•   Loved every minute of the film
•   entertaining, dramatic, very relatable
-    Everyone I am sure would like to change something about their childhood
-    We sometimes change a memory so the restores order and makes us live happy
•   Everyone can interpret the story differently and take from it what makes sense to them
•   Parent to child relationships are complicated and it is explored here.
•   The writing of the script was virtually flawless
•   Transitions between flashbacks and present are excellent
•   Was walking a fine line between being an ad campaign Walt Disney or hurting the reputation.
•   Executed perfectly stayed as close to the truth as possible while still being entertaining
•   Saw it as an apology to Travers' was fair to both Disney and Travers'
-    Richard Sherman cried after reading script because he didn't know what a terrible childhood she had.  Now looking back forgives her for basically ruining his life.
•   This film is not about Disney it is about Travers' and the creative process.
•   Emma Thompson brilliant should be winning the Oscar, very difficult to play such a complex person.  Hard to be mean and still be likable, very brilliant in that. (Actually apologized after scenes for being so nasty.
•   Tom Hanks does not look like Disney at all but he embodied his spirit, there were time throughout the film that is very believable that he was Disney.  (Were looking for an iconic actor to play Disney who is also, an icon.

•   Producer Allison Owen got the idea for the film from another script written in Australia about Travers' life.
•   Owen decided to focus on the creative process of Turing book into film
•   Sought out Marcel to write script.  (Marcel picked Saving Mr. Banks out of a slew of concepts)
•   Marcel wrote script and only realized when almost finished that the only studio that could make the film would be Disney because of all the copyrights to music and clips of the film Mary Poppins. (Thought Disney would give a cease/desist order)
•   After acquiring director John Lee Hancock, actors Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson Owens present the film to Disney.
•   Disney thought it was great and even allowed film makers to dig into the archive for research.  Also, allowed them to make the film how they saw it.

•   Father Travers Goff
-    Died when Travers’ was 7
-    Bank Manager
-    Alcoholic (Read poetry when he was drunk)
-    Travers' claims she was his favorite child
•   Mother Margaret
-    Tried to commit suicide after Father's death
-    not very confident
•   Aunt Ellie (Possibly whom Mary Poppins is fashioned after)
-    Did come to help out after father’s death
-    characterized as strict, structured, stable
-    did say such things as "spit spot"
•   Character
-    controversial (Wanted to control everything, yet believed it was written in the stars for her to adopt only one twin)
•   wanted to be a mother, yet tried to give him away
•   didn't want people to dig into her background after death, yet saved all documents and sent them to a library
-    inconsistent (not a good source for her own memories)
-    Very creative
-    Changed her entire identity (most of her friends didn't even know she aussie born
-    possibly bisexual
•   Mother
-    Adopted only one twin (Camillus) because her astrologist advised her to do this.
-    Did not tell him he was adopted. Discovered at age 17, when he ran into his identical twin
-    Became an alcoholic.
-    Camillus died young
•   Mary Poppins
-    said to have just flown in the window one day
-    A way to rewrite her childhood
-    Some are dark stories
-    claims she didn't know she would slide up the banister
-    Surprised P.L. Travers didn't know what she was going to do
-    Wrote a total of 6 books
-    Absolutely did not like the film, didn't think they were like her books; later claimed she learned to live with it.

•   Explores a parent/ child relationship
-    Unconditional love from child to parent
-    Child doesn't fully understand an adults choices
-    When child grows learns to understand
-    creates confliction in oneself when realizing that, that innocent love from a child becomes tainted when faced with knowing a parent could have made different choices
-    I believe this confliction to be the source of P.L.'s controversial character
-    Creativity of her father, yet structured like Aunt Ellie
-     We become the experience we have
•   20 year conquest
-    Mary Poppins was hers and did not want to share
-    Most conversations between Disney and Travers' were over the phone
-    Disney did promise Diane
-    Started creating the films 20 years before given the rights
-    Ended up handing over the film rights because she needed the money
•   Invention of Characters to change or rewrite past
-    Disney with Mickey and Poppins with PL
-    Rewrite our history, remember the past in different way
-    Story tellers establish order in the midst of chaos
-    Tom Hankins "That is what story tellers do. We restore order to imagination. We bring hope"
•   Creative Process
-    Budding heads
-    Disney was used to getting what he wanted and she came and said no.
-    Commend her for defending her work
-    Ultimately, Disney said what he needed to get the film rights and did what he wanted.
-    book and film are two very different mediums

•   Crying at the premier
-    Did cry because she did not like it.  Told Disney after the first thing that needs to go is the animation.  Disney said "that ship has sailed"
-    Marcel admits that she didn't cry because of joy or it hit so close to home.  Marcel was reestablishing order just as Tom Hanks as Disney said. She just wanted a happy ending

I have posted some Controversial Articles about Saving Mr. Banks, Keep in mind this is not my opinion and it does not indicate my feelings towards the film.  I LOVED THE FILM.

Oozma Kappa

First time in a long time I went to see a movie so Monsters University of course was well deserved.  I tried to not watch too many trailers or teasers for this movie. (I did not want to spoil it when I saw it, I.e. I didn't want to see all the funny parts in the commercials) I have to say I was not disappointed.

This movie was fantastic  a true disney classic.  I am always iffy on sequels or in this case prequels.  Disney's last prequel that I remember was kind of a let down (Ariel's Beginning).

Monsters University is definitely one for the ages in all aspects of   the phrase.
This is a movie ALL ages will enjoy young, old, and everything inbetween.  It a movie that families will be watching years from now and generation after generations will be able to enjoy this classically funny and whimsical film.  It really is a thing of beauty.

Lets just take a moment to appreciate the quality and work that has gone into this film.  The scenery is truly fantastic and quite literally out of this world.  I recall from Monsters Inc. that there are over 2.3 individually animated hairs.  I sure this to be the case in this movie as well. As always Disney is at the top of technological advances and is always setting the bar for quality!

Which character are you?  Let me know in the comments!

The story line is well developed and one that everyone can relate to as well and learn something (just like Disney to make learning fun).  I have to say that watching the characters interact and all the events taking place brought me to college a place that I haven't been to in while.  The storyline did kind of remind me of Revenge of the Nerds (absolutely hilarious, a must see) but at least this one is for all ages and a true underdog triumph adventure.

Overall excellent movie a must see.  One that I will surely buy.  My husband was doing his goofy laugh (the one you only hear when he thinks something is extremely funny).

Favorite Character: Art, hilarious as well as versatile. Also, very cute!
Favorite Scene:  Oozma Kappa initiation scene

This is totally unrelated to this movie but it is related to Pixar and I found it to be a good read.  The Pixar Theory
